The History of our Monastery

The Monastery N-D du Saint-Désert is built in the Chartreuse massif, a magnificent natural site, a place steeped in history and prayer that welcomed Saint Bruno in 1084. At the foot of the Chartreuse cliffs, the monastery was started in 1991 with precarious resources. The place is called ‘the Desert’, a providential name for a monastery of silence and solitude.

The monastery today

Entrusted to Notre-Dame, it will henceforth be known as Monastery N-D du Saint-Désert.
Its place at the heart of our Family is important, as the community assumes fundamental services for all monasteries : general secretariat, printing, architecture, crafts, etc., through which our charism is expressed.

Day after day, hour after hour, in a maximum of silence and solitude, we strive to live out the double commandment of loving God and loving our neighbor, in a life of solitude and fraternal communion.
