Priory of Saint-Dodon at Moustier-en-Fagne

The Monastery today

The Priory of Saint-Dodon at Moustier-en-Fagne is recognised by the local faithful as a sign of their Christian life, in an environment where Christian values are no longer reference points. For this reason, we keep the tradition of regularly having a Mass in the Roman rite at the end of the afternoon; it’s one of very few celebrated in the region, the Divine Liturgy being celebrated more rarely than formerly.

Our work includes, as well as the usual upkeep of the house, the painting of icons and welcome of retreatants. A separate building is available to welcome self-catering groups who come with their own leader.

  • Office in the Byzantine rite, celebrated in French
  • Simple monastic life in a place whose Benedictine history goes back to the 7th century
  • Welcome of individual retreatants, or groups accompanied by their own organiser, using a separate building with kitchen, dining room, oratory, meeting room and bedrooms.
  • Ecumenical spirit, fostered in particular by an interest in and prayer for Slavonic Christians
  • Icon painting

Some special features of our monastery

In our monastery, we wish to be inhabited by a spirit of prayer and to grow in charity – always keeping close to heart the desire for the unity of Christians –  proclaiming on our lips the praise of God through the eastern and western liturgy. We share this treasure with our guests, oblates and visitors. We wish to know better our Eastern brothers, whether Orthodox or Catholic, and to deepen our understanding of their spirituality. We also wish to enter deeply into the pictorial liturgy of the Icon. In trying to give priority to the fundamental aspects of monasticism which are common to East and West, we will certainly find fertile ground conducive to the unity of the Church.

We seek to make visible the richness of the interior and community life that the Christian East offers to the universal Church. Placing Christ at the centre of ours hearts, purified by the Spirit, is a way of walking towards the unity of the Church.
